Fishing Waders - How To Choose?

Updated: Jul 31, 2021

Choosing the right fishing waders doesn't have to be difficult.

The reasons for choosing which fishing waders to wear can be many. But the main reasons for choosing should include the material, style, function, weight, and price.

“Don't choose waders simply because you want a name brand name logo on your chest. This won't help you catch more fish."

Sure, if you want to pay high dollar for name brand waders, then that's ok. But what I've found is no matter where I get my waders, I end up replacing them every one or two years. For this reason, I prefer not to sink a car payment into them.

Waders Selection Criteria

  • Material Characteristics

    • Breathable

      • Very Important - make sure your waders allow you to perspire without heat build up inside the waders. Some folks wear waders because the water temperature is cold, some wear waders even when the water is warm because they don't want to get wet. Whatever your reason, you will need breathable waders.

    • Waterproof (obviously)

      • Synthetic, Neoprene Stocking Feet are the ideal materials. I tend to stay away from full body neoprene because of the amount of heat build up.

  • Weight

    • Most waders are designed to be lightweight. The only exception to this is waders with a built in boot typically tend to be heavy. These types of waders tend to be heavier and harder to maneuver.

  • Function

    • Wader pockets, zipper storage, etc. are nice features to have. I always make sure there's a pocket which I can safely place my cell phone.

  • Price

    • Prices for waders are all over the map. You can easily find a pair of fishing waders for over one thousand dollars. Do your research and compare. I purchase waders every two years on average. Because of this I want a pair of quality waders at an affordable price.
